Sandra Boynton Books: Great Books for Kids!
From the time my son was just a few months old, my husband and I decided to start reading to him. Most of the time it was part of his bedtime routine, but we enjoyed reading with him any time of day.
Two of our favorite books to read are written by Sandra Boynton: Moo, Baa, La La La! and But Not the Hippopotamus . They are fun to read and after a while, easy to memorize! I can still recite Moo, Baa, La La La when we are playing or I need to divert my son’s attention. We also enjoy the adorable cartoony illustrations.

Moo, Baa, La La La by Sandra Boynton
Boynton teaches onomatopoeia and makes learning animal sounds fun for kids in Moo, Baa, La La La!. It starts with basic animals and their sounds in a rhyme, then says “Three singing pigs say la, la, la! ‘No, no!’ you say, ‘that isn’t right. The pigs say OINK all day and night.’”. That has to be my favorite line, and one that has been repeated in this house on numerous silly occasions.
After reviewing some other sounds, the book ends with an illustration of all the animals looking at the reader and “(It’s quiet now. What doyou say?)”, with the parenthesis indicating a whispering voice. My son would make his own silly sound at that point.

But Not the Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton
In But Not the Hippopotamus, Boynton touches on how some children might feel left out when they see others engaging in activities, the politeness that comes with inviting everyone to participate, and the gratitude felt when the person who is left out is finally invited to join the group (at least that’s what I gather from reading it!). There is rhyming with the animals’ names and their activities, but the resounding line is “But not the hippopotamus”. The illustrations show the other animals enjoying themselves while the hippopotamus watches them nearby with sadness in its eyes.
The hippopotamus is finally invited by the others to join them but faces the dilemma of whether or not to join. Of course the hippopotamus says yes, but then the books ends with “But not the armadillo” suggesting that the basis behind the storyline would begin again.

As the back covers of the books suggest, they are truly "serious silliness for all ages!". We will continue to enjoy these awesome children's books for a long time. Happy reading!
