The Christmas Grab Box

Have a large family and many kids for which to buy Christmas presents? Going to or planning a kid’s Christmas party where party favors will be given? You might want to try a Christmas Grab Box!

A grab box is a fun way to give out many little gifts. It is simply a decorated box filled with little toys or goodies wrapped in tissue paper. Attached to each little item is a long string which is strung out of the box and covered with a layer of tissue paper.

History of the Christmas Grab Box

The Christmas Grab Box stems from a memory of my childhood. When I was a child, and even years before I was born, the Sunday School classes from my church would gather for a Christmas practice and party. During the party, the minister’s wife, who was my great-great aunt, would sit in the middle of the group of children with a decorated box that had strings hanging out on all sides. After speaking to us about how she loved Christmas, she would tell each child to hold onto a string from the box. We each knew that after she counted down from ten, we could quickly pull on our string and a little present would pop out of the box and into our hands.

How to Make a Christmas Grab Box

The Christmas Grab Box is pretty easy to assemble, and depending on the presents or favors you choose to place inside, can be really affordable as well.

Items Needed:

  • Empty box (I’m using a diaper box)
  • Wrapping paper
  • Ribbon or string
  • Tissue paper
  • Small toys or favors
  • Tape (packing tape may work best to keep paper on)
  • Scissors

Step One: Wrap the box in wrapping paper, keeping the top open.

Step Two: Wrap toys or favors in the tissue paper.

Step Three: Tie a long piece (36 or more inches) of ribbon or string around each item.

Step Four: Place items in the box, making sure that strings hang over the side of the box.

Step Five: Lightly tape a piece of tissue paper to the top of the box, allowing strings to hang loose.

How to Use the Christmas Grab Box

Now this is the fun part! Before using the box, keep it in a safe place—kids (and some adults) are very curious and might pull on a string or take a peek before you are ready. When it is time to use it, place the grab box in the center of the room, preferably on a small table, like a coffee table or an ottoman. Also, keep it away from anything breakable. If the kids pull too hard on the string, the items inside might fly out and smash your favorite crystal bowl…

Each child is given a string to hold. Make sure they are standing about a foot apart, again in case an item decides to fly. On your signal, each child will tug on the string and voila!—out pops a gift or favor for them to grab.

Reuse, Recycle

After the box is used, collect the discarded string and tissue paper. The string, if not broken, can be used again and the tissue paper can be used as stuffing for other gifts or when packing breakable items. The box can also be reused, even if the wrapping paper is torn.

This grab box can be used for a variety of occasions: birthday parties, holiday parties, makeup/Tupperware/Avon/etc parties and many more! It is a great idea for adults to use as well, and may be a fun thing to bring to your next event.

This is a great idea. It makes me wish my kids were younger again or I was a room mother again. I may try to find some "excuse" to do this - maybe some Christmas Eve gifts (gift cards & other small gifts) for everyone that comes by.

ktrapp, it would be great for Christmas Eve gifts or anytime for anyone! Thanks so much for reading and commenting. :)

I've known other teachers who would use the grab bag for reward days and whatnot, too. Kids always seem to enjoy it.

Hi, I've never heard of this before and I have to say it's a brilliant idea. I really like it. I guess it could also be used on adults - maybe at Halloween, with scary things on the ends of the ribbons.

A very versatile idea. Voted up.

Oh, what a fun idea. Cheapie stuff from the dollar store would be perfect for this kind of thing. It's the mystery and fun of ripping the pull-cords that would excite the kids, and as we all know, kids often lose interest in that shiny expensive toy all too soon.

I'm passing this along to my daugher--great for the grandkids...and also a great idea for schoolteachers for seasonal days like Valentine's, Halloween and Thanksgiving!

Voted up and awesome!

(Oh, and congrats on Hub of the Day!)

I love this idea and just so timely as Christmas is just around the corner. With individual gifts getting more expensive, this would not only give them gifts but have fun getting/receiving or grabbing it...lol, i think even adults would love to do this. Voted up and thanks for sharing how to make it, am not really that artistic and your instructions are easy to follow. Btw, congrats for being chosen Hub of the day.

Very cool idea. Like your personal testimony and story of your aunt sharing with children at Christmas time as a pastor's wife in her husband's church. I will be looking up more of your hub ideas!

This was super duper great....I love this idea, and would love to reference back to this hub from my blog if you don't mind ( holyjeansnmyfavoritethings.blogspot.com ). I got to thinking, how awesome this would be too for a Baby shower game of some sort, and have little pacifiers tied on to the ends of the strings. Now what goes on the other end of the string I'd have to leave for someone more creative lol. I'm not so much. So excited to do one of these for the kids Christmas parties. Oh and congrats on Hub of the day, much deserved.
